Professor Irena Creed’s research above the Arctic Circle is primarily centered in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, where world-class, long-term records linking climate, catchments, and lakes provide an extraordinary opportunity to understand how northern freshwater ecosystems are responding to rapid environmental change. Together with an incredible group of scientists, Professor Creed is studying a striking transformation across the North: the greening of the land and the browning of the water, and how those changes alter the movement of carbon and nutrients from landscapes into lakes, with consequences that ripple through entire freshwater food webs. These exceptional long-term datasets allow the researchers to see ecological changes unfolding over decades rather than as snapshots in time. Professor Creed and her collaborators are now exploring how general these patterns are across the Arctic, and whether what they are learning in northern Europe can help to understand and anticipate changes occurring in North American lakes.
